Dispense a Chemotherapy Script

This topic provides step-by-step instructions on dispensing a chemotherapy prescription.

  1. On the Fred Dispense screen, enter the required details in the following fields:
    • Patient Name or Repeat No
    • Script Date
    • Script Type
    • Medical Doctor
  2. In the Drug or Repeat No field, type the first few letters of the drug name, then press [Enter].

    The Drug Selection window is displayed, and shows Chemotherapy drugs that match your search.

    The QTY column shows the PBS maximum dispense dosage, rather than showing the number of vials.

    The Drug Type column displays CHEM, or CHEM Gen for generic items.

  3. Select the chemotherapy item with the correct PBS Code. In the case of Epirubicin, you can select any of the entries shown, because they all have the same PBS Code.
  4. In the Directions field, enter directions, if required.
  5. In the Repeats field, enter the number of repeats required.

    When you leave the Repeats field, the Chemotherapy Dispensing Quantities window is displayed.

  6. In the Prescribed QTY field, type the prescribed quantity, then press [Enter].

    The Dispensed QTY field defaults to same quantity you entered in the Prescribed QTY field.

    If you enter a dose which exceeds the PBS maximum, Fred Dispense will prompt you for a phone approval code.

  7. In the Dispensed QTY field, increase or decrease the quantity, if required, then press [Enter].

    You can increase or decrease the Dispensed QTY by up to 10% of the Prescribed QTY without an authority approval or new prescription. being required.

    When you leave the Dispense QTY field, Fred Dispense calculates the lowest-cost combination of vials that make up the dispense quantity. The combination is displayed in the following locations on the Chemotherapy Dispensing Quantities window:

    • The Lowest Cost Combination box, on the right.
    • The Used column, on the left.

  8. At this point, you can change the combination of vials to be dispensed; or you can accept the lowest-cost combination that was automatically calculated by Fred Dispense.
    • To choose a different combination: type the number of vials required, then press [End]. For instructions on manually adjusting the number of vials, see Chemotherapy: Choose a Different Vial Combination.

      Regardless of the the vial combination you select, your reimbursement will be based only on the lowest-cost combination.

    • To accept the proposed combination: click Ok, or press [End].

      The Fred Dispense screen is displayed, and shows the Prescribed Quantity above the Dispensed Quantity field.

  9. To finish dispensing, press [Tab] or [Enter].

    If you enter a dose in the Prescribed QTY field that exceeds the PBS maximum, Fred Dispense will prompt you for a phone approval code.
