Add an Own Brand Drug

The Own Brand Drug file is a limitless database where you can store and maintain a list of private items that you regularly dispense, but are not included or maintained in the Monthly Fred Dispense Drug Update. Drugs that are set up in the Own Brand Drug file appear along with other drugs when searched. They are flagged as PRIVATE within the drug selection screen.

Own Brand items can only be dispensed as Private. If you cannot locate an item in Fred Dispense, check the PBS website (http://pbs.gov.au/pbs/home) before adding it as an Own Brand entry.

Create an Own Brand drug

  1. From the Lists menu, select Own Brand Drugs (or press <ALT+L><B>) to display the Own Brand Drugs window.

  2. Click <Add> to display a blank record and supply Item information as follows:
    • Name / Code: Enter the name of the Own Brand Drug. The Code field is automatically populated when the item is saved. A unique code is assigned to each Own Brand Drug.
    • Form: Press <CTRL+L> to display the list or enter the abbreviation (if known).
    • Strength: Enter the strength for this item (if required). Press <TAB> or <ENTER> to move to the next field.
    • Generic / Code: Enter the Generic name of the Own Brand Drug. Use the Code field to link Own Brand Drugs that have the same Generic name (if required). Note the Code from the existing entry to be linked to, then enter it in the Code field of the new record. The Code is a decimal point followed by by a number with NO preceding zeroes. For example, .55.
    • Pack Size: Set to the minimum size which can be dispensed allowing for the opportunity to “break” packs. For example, cream or ointment would have a Pack Size of 1, whereas tablets in a box of 20 can have a pack size of 1 (if never dispensed in smaller quantities) or 20 if they are dispensed in smaller quantities.
    • Wholesale: Enter the wholesale price.
    • Add GST? Set to <Y> if GST is to be added to dispensing price. Set to <N> if GST is not to be added to dispensing price.

Edit Own Brand Drug

  1. Press <ALT+L>, then <B> to open the Own Brand Drugs window.
  2. Press <F> or <ENTER> to display the Own Brand Drug Search window.
  3. Use the <Down Arrow> and <Up Arrow> to locate the entry you want to edit.
  4. Press <ENTER> to select item, then press <U> to update the item.
  5. Make the required changes, then press <END> or click <Save>.
  6. To cancel changes, press <ESC> or click <Cancel>.
  7. At the prompt, press <Y> or <N> to confirm your decision.

Dispense Own Brand Drugs

  1. Search for Own Brand Drugs using the same methods as for other types of drugs.
  2. Once the drug has been selected for dispensing, the Script Type is automatically set to P for Private.
  3. Continue dispensing as for any other item.
